2021 Design Careers Fair | DCC

Overview

Design Careers Fair is one of the main events our Design Careers Club hosts every year. DCF aims to empower design students at UC Davis and provide opportunities to connect with companies and alumni. We aim to reach out to companies and alumni to discuss their experiences in the industry and provide advice to students.

DCF 2021 will be limited to a virtual format this year because of COVID-19. Lacking the personal touch to the careers fair, as well as many students' increasing zoom fatigue from having a virtual experience, there is a concern about the number of attendees as well as the usefulness of the event.

Processes

Mood boards went through many iterations to find a more concrete theme. The key word to the 2021 Design Careers is “redesigned” was reflected in the creative direction. The general idea was to have a graphical element that evokes a sense of friendliness and connectedness with design students.

Iterations

There were many iterations when trying to figure out what type of graphical element to connect to the redesigned theme. Earliest versions played with many different ideas, including icons, oversized text, stroke, kerning, strikethroughs, mixing typefaces, and layout.

I introduced lines first as a guideline to a grid to create more structure and cohesion to the design. While I wanted them to become a key part of the design, they weren’t integrated, and instead served decorative purposes that had no connection with the text.

Playing off of the unique quality of the “I am online with u” typeface as well as opting for an “invisible grid” in which elements are placed, a coherent design began to form. Multiple iterations of different layout styles were created in different sizes.

Graphic Standard

The graphic standard for DCF originally included a color palette consisting of shades of primary colors. However, through multiple iterations, the number of colors were reduced to using the red and blue shade along with neutral white and gray colors.

Initial fonts included “I am online with u” , “Enso” , “The Machine” and “Mametosca.” Considering legibility, “I am online with u” became the best choice as the display font and “Enso” as the body font.
